canopy by whoyoucallinshort canopy by whoyoucallinshort
what is a canopy? an overhang? a cantilevered beam? a protector of sun? sound? smell?

here i've tried to design a grid of self-supporting laminated beams to shade the pattern of the azimuth of sun during the day.

dimensions are 4.5m X 4.5 m.

well i'm actually thinking about building it over the summer to see how it would hold up... the details called for massive support underneath to hold up the cantilever, but the model seemed to stay up just fine on it's own, so i might be able to arch the wood just to the point to get the support needed without digging! we'll see. i'll post pictures if i actually build it.

no.... i thought about that or even making it rotate with the sun's movement around it, but it was designed as if we (our studio) were to build it, which means simplify completely, so it's simply one arch repeated. i really do want to build it so we'll see!

i'm sure you could still keep it very simple and make it rotate and collapse : it would be a case of making each of the arches tesselate together somehow i think...

ummm.... it's supposed to be designed after the sun pattern so theoRETICally..... yeah it'll shade the area underneath it anytime during midday. it's kinda the end result of analyzing the azimuths and altitudes of the sun. obviously it doesnt help with the extreme east and west so maybe i was a bit off in the lighting for the picture.. but it generally does the trick! and i really wanted it to be a transition space also rather than just a tent.
